ABOUT THE CAPSULE COLLECTION RISD and the RISD Museum were founded in 1877 on the belief that art and design matter to everyone. In honor of our 150th anniversary, this capsule collection features a selection of archival marks reflecting the many eras, individuals, and points of view that make up RISD. These pieces offers an opportunity to travel through time and embrace our many creative voices.
ABOUT THE RISD SEAL The original RISD Seal was created by stone carver, calligrapher, and RISD Professor John Howard Benson in 1951 and was then redrawn digitally—closer to the original—by Ryan Bugden 14 GD in 2021. It was released in 2022 with the launch of RISD’s new identity. About the “150 Mark” Created by Nick Benson HD 24—master carver, artist, and grandson of John Howard Benson—this mark echoes the flourishes of the original RISD Seal, connecting RISD’s past to its 150th anniversary.
